The<br \/>\nprayer not as a spiritual exercise, but the devotion to God<br \/>\nthat permeates prayer and all spiritual exercises. \u2018Prayer is the devoted<br \/>\nfocus of the heart on God\u2019, writes Guido de Kartuizer. To him, prayer is<br \/>\nlonging. With this, he harks back to one of Augustine\u2019s notions:<br \/>\n\u2018Longing always prays, even if the tongue is silent. When you long, you always pray\u2019. &#8216;God&#8217;,<br \/>\nsays Guido, \u2018hastily rushes to meet the longing soul\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrayerful longing and the mystical experience are inextricably linked.<br \/>\nIn this mystical experience, longing is transformed in the presence of<br \/>\nsomething that transcends you.
